Understanding the Child Behind the Label

Every child is unique.

At SL Tutoring UK, I believe that successful learning starts with understanding the individual child, not simply their diagnosis, age or year group.

Many of the learners I work with have experienced challenges in education. Some may struggle with confidence, anxiety, friendships, school attendance, organisation, communication or self-belief. Others may simply learn differently and need an approach that works for them.

My aim is always the same: to create a safe, supportive environment where children feel understood, valued and capable of success.

Experience and Understanding

I am a qualified teacher with over 20 years of experience in education, including leadership roles within primary schools and extensive experience supporting children and young people with a wide range of additional needs.

Throughout my career I have worked with learners with:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance)
  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Anxiety and school-based difficulties
  • Sensory differences
  • Learning difficulties

I also work with many children who do not have a formal diagnosis but who experience barriers to learning and benefit from a more personalised approach.

A Strength-Based Approach

Children are far more than a list of difficulties.

When planning tuition, I take time to understand:

  • What motivates them
  • Their interests and passions
  • Their strengths
  • Their worries and frustrations
  • How they communicate best
  • What helps them feel successful

By building on strengths and interests, learning becomes more meaningful, engaging and enjoyable.

Many children who arrive believing they "can't do it" begin to rediscover confidence in their own abilities.

Working With Professional Reports

Parents and carers are welcome to share reports and recommendations from professionals where they feel this may help support their child.

This may include:

  • Educational Psychologist reports
  • Occupational Therapy reports
  • Speech and Language Therapy reports
  • EHCP documentation
  • School reports
  • Medical information relevant to learning

Where reports are shared, I use my professional experience to identify practical strategies and adaptations that can be incorporated into tuition sessions.

The goal is always to bridge the gap between recommendations on paper and meaningful support in practice.

How Learning May Be Adapted

There is no single approach that works for every child.

Depending on individual needs, adaptations may include:

  • Visual supports
  • Structured routines
  • Clear expectations
  • Movement breaks
  • Chunked instructions
  • Reduced writing demands
  • Alternative recording methods
  • Additional processing time
  • Practical activities
  • Sensory considerations
  • Flexible lesson pacing
  • Scaffolded learning tasks
  • Technology to support learning
  • Special interest-based learning

Sessions are adapted to meet the learner rather than expecting the learner to fit a particular teaching style.

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing

Learning and emotional wellbeing are closely linked.

Many learners benefit from having a trusted adult who understands the challenges they face and celebrates their successes, however small they may seem.

I strive to create sessions where children feel:

  • Safe
  • Respected
  • Listened to
  • Encouraged
  • Challenged appropriately
  • Proud of their progress

Building confidence is often just as important as building academic skills.

Working in Partnership With Families

Parents know their children best.

I value open communication and work closely with families to ensure support remains relevant and effective.

This may include:

  • Regular updates
  • Discussion of progress and next steps
  • Reviewing reports and recommendations
  • Sharing strategies that may help at home
  • Identifying barriers to learning
  • Supporting transitions between key stages

Where appropriate and capacity allows, I may also be able to support parents and carers in discussions with schools and other professionals.

Home Education and SEND

Many home educating families choose SL Tutoring UK because they are looking for flexible, personalised support that recognises their child's individual needs.

Whether a child is following a structured curriculum or a more child-led approach, tuition can be adapted to complement the learning already taking place at home.

There Is No Requirement for a Diagnosis

Some learners have a formal diagnosis.

Some are on waiting lists.

Some simply learn differently.

A diagnosis is never required to access support.

If you feel your child would benefit from a more personalised, understanding approach to learning, I would be delighted to discuss how I may be able to help.

A Personal Note

Every family’s journey is different. The organisations above provide a wealth of information and support, but they can sometimes feel overwhelming. If you are unsure where to start, please feel free to ask. Whilst I cannot provide legal advice or diagnostic services, I am always happy to help families understand reports, explore available support and signpost useful resources where I can.
